Ice Wrap for Ankle Injuries

by Joshua Steimle
My IronMan Diet

I really wish I had one of these, or two, when I was growing up as a skateboarder. Shoes being what they are, they generally leave the ankle or the leg just above the ankle exposed, and anyone who has been a skater knows that in any given hour you’ll get hit with the board 5-6 times in that area. I’ve got so much scar tissue around my ankles and on the insides of my legs that if I could cut it all out I could probably meet my goal of losing 10 lbs by the end of the week.

But better late than never, ActiveWrap just sent me one of their foot and ankle ice wraps to try out. And I think I can sell you on buying one with one question–have you ever sat, icing your ankle or foot, with a ziploc bag full of ice cubes? You have? Ok, then I don’t even need to tell you why you want one of these wraps.

For those of you who haven’t experienced the joy of sandwich bags full of ice or bags of frozen vegetables, the issues are that:

1) You have to figure out a way to hold the bag there. Yes, duct tape works, but then you have to take the duct tape off. Ropes also work, if you’re a good Boy Scout. I have used bags of frozen corn, stuffed into the legs of my jeans, but then you have to hold still once you get the bag wedged in there just right.

2) You have to cover the bag with something to prevent getting an ice burn, and either the towel is too thin or too thick.

3) What if you just ran out of ice?

4) Your spouse doesn’t like the idea of you thawing out frozen vegetables with your sweaty foot.

Trust me, it’s just a pain to use a bag of ice or frozen whatevers. The ActiveWrap ankle wrap solves all those problems, and has some distinct advantages:

1) You can walk around without worrying about it falling out of place.

2) You don’t have to hold it in place.

3) The material is just right to let the right amount of cold come through.

4) It comes with cold packs, so you don’t have to worry about having ice on hand.

5) You can move the packs around within the wrap to get the cold in just the right spot.

6) You can heat the packs up in the microwave for heat treatment! Try that with a bag of ice.

ActiveWrap also makes knee wraps, and wraps for wrists, your back, shoulder, and elbow. Now that I think of it, I should have asked them for one of each…

Marlins Prospect Matt Dominguez to miss 6-8 weeks with fractured elbow

Matt Dominguez

Marlins top Prospect Matt Dominguez, who almost made the Majors this year, will miss around 6-8 weeks with a fractured elbow reports Juan C. Rodriguez of the Sun Sentinel.

Dominguez sustained the injury when he was hit by a pitch on Friday while playing an exhibition game against the Triple-A Mets affiliate. “He wasn’t in a very talkative mood,” said Fernando Dominguez’s father, Matt’s father. “It’s part of baseball. It’s a little depressing right now, but it’s part of the sport. He’ll bounce back from this.” He also added that his son will undergo an MRI in the coming days.

The 21-year old was in big-league camp this spring with a chance to win the Opening Day third base job.

run, zoe, run! Daily Adventures in Running: ActiveWrap Product Review

Everyone knows that I have bad feet. They’ve suffered stress fractures, morton’s neuromas, plantars warts, missing toenails, tendonitis, you name it. I actually have my own gray “boot” and crutches because I needed them so much. So, when ActiveWrap contacted me with an offer to try out their Hot/Cold Therapy compression foot/ankle wrap, how in the world could I say no? And let me tell you, I am so grateful for this product!

ActiveWrap Foot and Ankle

Let’s say that the other day’s ice bath helped my muscles, as I was definitely not sore the next day (score!), but my joints (ankles in particular) enjoy a little “spot treatment” for the most part. I like to stick to icing those areas when needed…and lately, that’s a lot.

Here are the specs (via ActiveWrap’s site):

Includes the ActiveWrap compress support wrap and two reusable 4.5″ x 7″ heat & ice packs packaged in a handy nylon drawstring storage bag.
“New” Specially formulated non-toxic gelatinous thermal material that completely alleviates gel migration away from the injured site found in competitors’ packs. This unique composition is vacuum sealed in a sturdy 8.5mil PE/Nylon covering and slipped into a re-closing, washable, nylon pouch.
Patented technology utilizes rugged hook and loop to secure and position your heat and ice exactly where you need it.
Active medical plush supporter delivers an ultra soft feel with jersey outside and lycra trim lining.
One Year Warranty, Latex Free, Washable, and Reusable for years of use.
Available in Sm-Md (Size 3-10 foot), Lg-XL (Size 10.5-18 foot)

Icing the top and bottom of my foot

My thoughts:
I must say, this thing is pretty amazing. The “gel” packets stay cold for a long time. Yes, really…a LONG time. I timed it and just stopped at around 3 hours. Granted, I did not ice my foot for 3 hours, but the pack stayed cold for that long. Awesomesauce. Then there’s the fact that the packets mold to my foot and are not hard as a rock like my other ice packs–another very neat feature. The compression wrap feels like neoprene (like some of my scuba gear), and it fits really well to my foot.

The packets are very easy to warm up in the microwave, and they still stay malleable. Not only do I find them to be super comfy on my feet, I also found another use for them: to warm up my daughter’s crib. Oh goodness! It’s fantastic! I place the two packets where I am going to lay her a couple minutes before putting her to bed and she’s all warm and cozy.

PROS:
Gel packs stay super cold for a long time
Packets stay soft and aren’t hard like other ice packs
Able to be used hot or cold
Packets stay in place easily with compression wrap and velcro slip-covers
ActiveWrap has wraps for feet, back, knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists
Price is great, and there’s a 1 year warranty

CONS:
???

Ankle Ice and Heat Compression Wrap- London, England Review

Active Wrap Ice and Heat Compression Wraps

Injury is part of the package when it comes to running. If you speak to any experienced runner then they will more than likely have spent at least some time recovering from one of the many ailments that plagues the sport such as stress fractures, tendon damage or shin splints.

Active Wrap Ankle Wrap

Cross training, gym work, rest sessions and running on soft surfaces all play their part in guarding against injury, but when those twists and twinges do occur then often ice is one of the best treatments for reducing swelling and speeding up recovery.

Active Wrap products have been developed to offer targeted hot and cold therapy treatment to the area where you need it most. No more do you have to struggle with ice packs or frozen peas to cover the area of swelling as the wraps mould to your joint contours which means that it is easy to apply both compression and hot or cold treatment to the area of swelling or pain without struggling to keep any ice or heat pads in place.

The Active Wrap products are available for all of the major joints and can be used to apply both hot and cold treatments to the damaged area of the joint.

The ankle wrap is perfect for applying ice to a twisted or tender ankle – which is an all too common injury that runners suffer from during cross country or trail running.

Active Wrap Ankle

The wraps include ice/heat packs that are held into the wrap using Velcro. This makes them easily to detach for freezing and then to subsequently reattach.

Active Wrap products have been through thousands of texts and now carry the Physioquality seal of approval which means that they are used nationwide by physiotherapists and sports professionals worldwide.

Active Wrap products are available from the Active Wrap website and are supplied with a free drawstring bag.

Active Wrap – A company with supernatural powers? ESP?

Written by Tony Korologos for Hooked On Golf (HookedonGolfBlog.com)
February 10, 2011

There are some events which are entertaining coincidences. There are some coincidences which are so freaky, you can hardly believe there isn’t some other sort of supernatural force at work. The latter happened yesterday.
Hooked on Golf

Active Wrap elbow wrap was waiting on my doorstep the day I injured my elbow!?! Woa.

As many of you who read this golf blog know, I separated my shoulder almost three weeks ago. I’ve been recovering and the pain level is bearable. I’ve got 75% of the function back in my right arm now. I’m confident enough to go out and about without my sling now.

So I’m at a store yesterday and I need to put something in the middle passenger seat of my van. And as was pointed out on my Facebook page, yes I no longer have a sports car. That was two wives and three kids ago… But I digress.

I’m loading some stuff into my van with my right arm. I didn’t realize that I failed to open the door far enough for it to catch and stay open. So the van door slid closed and hit my right elbow so hard, it brought me to the ground in pain. Yes, of course it was the elbow of the arm with the separated shoulder. There’s a part of your elbow which has no meat around it. Just a few layers of skin and then bone underneath. That’s where it hit. Kill me now.

I get home, and as is normal there are some boxes on my doorstep; the normal stuff, some golf clubs and a bunch of golf accessories companies send in for me to review. Lo and behold, one box is from Active Wraps. What was inside took me aback. Inside that box was an elbow ice wrap, complete with two thermal pads which could be frozen or heated depending on the treatment needed. Within 20 minutes of incurring an elbow injury, I had an elbow wrap on my doorstep.
Elbow Ice Wrap, Elbow Ice Pack

Supernatural or simply a coincidence? You be the judge.

I’m currently using the elbow ice wrap for my bum elbow. It is helping to reduce the swelling and elbow pain, as I’ve frozen the thermal packs and am using them like ice packs.

As a golfer, I’ve suffered from some pretty bad cases of tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow. There is a difference between the two and if you are really unlucky, you’ll have both like I did. The Active Wrap elbow system will surely help if and when those golf elbow injuries flare up.
